A Different Kind of Athlete

Competitive speed eating, is a popular sport in which participants compete against each other to consume as much food as they can in a short time interval. Contests are typically less than 15 minutes in length, with the person consuming the most food being declared the winner. Competitive speed eating is popular in the United States, where organized professional eating contests often offer $10,000 or more in prize money (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competitive_eating). However, Competitive Endurance Eating has not caught on in the United States…

Speed eating is like the 400 meter sprint where as Endurance eating is the Boston Marathon. Endurance eating revolves around going consecutive days, hours, or weeks eating a particular food, food genre, or at a food location. Speed eating is currently the cat’s meow in the competitive eating world, but I think there are many competitive endurance eaters waiting for the sport to gain attention. How many out there ate 3 cheeseburgers every day for the last 1,000 days? Is that not more impressive then eating 65 cheeseburgers in 10 minutes? I guess it's a matter of opinion. It's like a debate of what's more impressive - the fastest guy in the world or the guy who can run the 27 miles in the shortest time. Imagine a man, a legend, an iron man...who can go 2,131 consecutive days with eating a hot dog. Through stomach pains and viruses, through colds, and through days where he doesn't have immediate access to a hot dog and has to drive thousands of miles to get one. Will banners be displayed when he accomplished this legendary level of endurance eating??? No, probably not, because the sport of competitive endurance eating currently doesn't exist, but we can dream of the day when it does.
